Wine Calculator

First, we assume you're looking at storage options because you have some quality wine you want to drink and you want to ensure that there will also be some for the future.

A top quality wine (first tier) will drink best after 5 - 15 years (sometimes more). Let's take the average - 10 years.

Use the calculator to determine how much storage you need.

Step 1: How many top quality, properly aged bottles (first tier, average 10 years old) do you want to drink each year? An average of one a week? (More in some weeks with special occasions, less in others).

That's 50 bottles a year, give or take a couple.

Every year you will need to replace these 50 10-year-old bottles with equivalent quality wine of the current vintage.

Step 2: How many good quality, moderately aged bottles of wine would you drink a week? These are the lesser quality (second tier) but still very good wines that improve with four to six years of cellaring but won't necessarily last the full ten years. An average of 2 per week? That's 100 per year with an average age of five years which means that each year you will need to replace these 100 bottles.

It may surprise you how much storage you will need. But when you do the calculations, you can see it's true. That's why people who are serious about their wine nearly always buy a 410 to start. (More storage at a better price.)
